Up Next: Wales Grand Slam 2022

Blog Single

We are back with our 1st Grand Slam event of the year! There is only 1 sleep left until everything gets underway as we start with the qualification tournament tomorrow afternoon! It is great to be returning to Wales and specifically Barry Island again after such a successful event last year.

We caught up with Lewis Fenech in the build up to the event. Lewis has been through the ranks starting at the lower level event and climbing his way up through the rankings with multiple top 4 results going through the different star level of events. Now directly with a seat in the Main Draw it shows that playing each level and achieving success will help you climb the ladder to the pinnacle of the UK Beach Tour.

How excited are you to be competing here this weekend and what are you looking forward to most?

“It's a great opportunity to be playing at Barry once again! Being able to compete across the country allows teams to continue to improve and showcase what talent the UKBT has.”

What do you think your teams biggest strength is?

“Our biggest strength is definitely the huge height advantage we bring to the court 😅 ....... unfortunately not! Myself and Tom have been working together now for 3 years and our team connection along with our combination plays are definitely a strength as a pair.”

What are your goals for this years UKBT season?

“Our goals are to qualify for national champs at the end of the year. Along the way we would love to continue to develop our home venues in Essex and Hertfordshire.”

How do maintain a high level of play when travelling to all the amazing UKBT destinations around the country?

“We used to struggle with the travel aspects however now we try to allow for plenty of warm up time and are adding in a training session on the day before the event.”

Lewis will also be doing a takeover of the instagram for us at the first Grand Slam of the year so be sure to stay tuned for all that is to come!

Last year we had an amazing event at Barry Island in Cardiff. Fun fact about Barry Island is that this is where they filmed the popular award winning UK TV series Gavin & Stacey. If you haven’t seen it then we recommend you check it out ;) Both the men’s and women’s draws are stacked with talent and the qualification tournament is going to be hard fought with some great teams as they will be bringing the firepower out there this weekend! An excellent way to start off the first Grand Slam the year and we know everyone is going to be fired up for it! If you get the chance be sure to get down to Barry Island for some high flying action!

Thanks again to the event organisers Fireball, the sponsors of the UK Beach Tour and our local event sponsors as well! Without your help events like these would not be possible.

See you at the beach!
