The Grand Slam Series is back and we are now at our 3rd stop! We have been on the sands of Wonderful Weymouth, then up into Sizzling Scotland as battle took place in Edinburgh and now we make our way to the Beautiful Barry Island in Cardiff! A true journey bringing together the UK throughout these series of events and showcasing the great level of beach volleyball that we have here in the UK.
There are only 2 sleep left until Cardiff will be hosting the 3rd stop on the UKBT Grand Slam and we caught up with none other than Wales beach volleyball athlete Conor Robins! We asked his thoughts on the event and Connor said; “I am so excited to be having a Grand Slam event in Cardiff. It will be amazing to have a large amount of supporters who are welsh and it gives the people of Wales an insight into a sport that they wouldn’t normally see being played!”
We also asked Connor what makes this event unlike any of the other Grand Slam events? “I feel like this event will be different from others because it’s on the iconic beach of Barry Island which is the home of a very popular British SitCom Gavin & Stacey. Having all the Welsh crowds will give a louder and different atmosphere to other events. There is no telling what surprises they may bring.” So without a doubt it will be another great, exciting and fun competition!
Finally we asked Connor on any predictions he might have for how the tournament will go to which he said, “I feel like every grand slam that has happened so far has brought us different surprised results. Having to choose a prediction would be very difficult however, I feel like the craftiness of Mark Garcia-Kidd & JJ will be a crowd favourite as well as the battles with the stacked women’s draw too.”
Some extra information for any new readers and those of you who are unaware of how the Grand Slam series works. The format of the event is the top 16 teams are split into 4 groups on day 1 where they battle it out for a place into the finals day on day 2! Day 2 is then filled with jam packed action of the quarter finals, semi finals and then the grand final where only 1 team per gender can be crowned winners and take home the Cardiff title, along with a “Ticket to the Finals!” Each winner of a grand slam gets an automatic ticket to the finals held in Bournemouth in September for a chance to be crowned the Grand Slam Finals Champions! With 2 tickets already decided there are only 2 more left to win so it is all to play for!
All we know is that we are in for an absolute show this upcoming weekend and we hope all of you follow along with us on our social media channels and the hosts Fireball Beach Volleyball.
